Harry Styles exits Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu remake due to scheduling conflicts

April 15, 2022 by Gary Collinson

With the hotly-anticipated historical epic The Northman set to open later this month, it appears that filmmaker Robert Eggers may finally be set to turn his attention to Nosferatu, his long-planned remake of the classic silent horror film from F.W. Murnau.

We already know that the project will reunite Eggers with The Witch and The Northman actress Anya Taylor-Joy as the female lead, and it seems she wasn’t the only talent attached to the remake as The New Yorker has revealed that former One Direction star Harry Styles was also on board but has had to exit due to scheduling issues.

Styles made his acting debut in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk and also popped up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe last year with a cameo in Eternals, while he has Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling and Michael Grandage’s My Policeman incoming.

An unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Noseferatu starred Max Schreck in a chilling performance as the vampire Count Orlok. It’s unclear whether Styles was attached to the role of the vampire, although the ‘Jonathan Harker’ character of Thomas Hutter would seem the obvious choice.

UPDATE: Eggers has now confirmed that Styles was indeed attached to the role of Thomas Hutter, the filmmaker telling EW that: “I’ve been trying to get the word out because the word did carry that Harry Styles was going to be in the movie. I just want to be clear that he was going to be Hutter and not Nosferatu himself.”
