Karyn Kusama’s Dracula-inspired Mina Harker scrapped weeks before production

April 19, 2022 by EJ Moreno

Horror fans know Karyn Kusama is a talented filmmaker, and were delighted to learn she’ll tackle the legendary Dracula story. Sadly, only a few weeks before production was set to jump off, it will no longer happen.

Deadline reports that Blumhouse and Miramax have scrapped the project once titled Mina Harker. Deadline notes that “Miramax exited over creative differences with the filmmaker.” Karyn Kusama was set to direct with a script based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula penned by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi.

Deadline adds that Kusama was producing the movie with Jason Blum, Hay, Manfredi, and Miramax’s Bill Block. Bea Sequeira was the executive producer and was overseeing the production for Blumhouse. No word on where the creative differences happened and who it was between.

Mina Harker was set in contemporary Los Angeles, centering on the titular protagonist, who plays opposite Dracula in the movie. The iconic vampire would be known as Vladimir in the film. Playing the role of Mina Harker was Blindspotting actress and #FreeRayshawn Jasmine Cephas Jones, who just won an Emmy for the latter.

Kusama recently directed the pilot and served as executive producer of Showtime’s hit series Yellowjackets. She’s best known for her films Girlfight, Æon Flux, Jennifer’s Body, The Invitation, and Destroyer.
