We’re just hours away from the premiere of Lucasfilm’s hotly-anticipated new Disney+ series Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi, which not only reunites Prequel Trilogy co-stars Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen for the first time since 2005’s Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, but also promises to bring together the former master and apprentice for what will hopefully prove to be a rematch for the ages.
The Obi-Wan Kenobi series takes place in the period between the Prequel and Original Trilogies, picking up some ten years after Obi-Wan Kenobi chopped up his old Padawan following Anakin’s heel turn to the Dark Side before leaving young Skywalker for dead on the burning embers of a Mustafar lavabank. A tragic end to their relationship – or so Obi-Wan believed, with director Deborah Chow revealing to io9 this week that the Jedi Master believes Anakin to be dead when the series begins.
“He believes he killed [Anakin] at the end of Revenge of the Sith,” said Chow. “I think that’s something that’s sometimes a little bit overlooked, but it’s quite significant. So for us, on the show, he doesn’t know [Anakin is alive] yet. ‘How did he go from the end of Revenge of the Sith where he’s this warrior screaming on the banks of Mustafar to sort of the calm and the peace of Alec Guinness? Something obviously happened in that 20 years and in large part that’s the story we’re trying to tell.”

We’ll see how just Obi-Wan reacts to the news of Anakin’s survival – and his reaction to seeing Vader more machine now than man – when Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi begins streaming this Friday on Disney+.
The story begins 10 years after the dramatic events of “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” where Obi-Wan Kenobi faced his greatest defeat—the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, who turned to the dark side as evil Sith Lord Darth Vader.
Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi is being directed by Deborah Chow (The Mandalorian), with McGregor joined in the cast by Hayden Christensen (Darth Vader), Joel Edgerton (Owen Lars) and Bonnie Piesse (Beru Lars), as well as Star Wars newcomers Moses Ingram, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, Maya Erskine, Benny Safdie and Grant Feely.
Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi will premiere on Disney+ on May 27th.
