Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai announces Zach Galligan return, more cast revealed

July 23, 2022 by Ricky Church

HBO Max revealed yesterday more have been cast in Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, an animated series based on the popular franchise. Original Gremlins star Zach Galligan will return as Billy Peltzer alongside George Takei (Star Trek), Sandra Oh (Killing Eve), Randall Park (WandaVision) and Bowen Yang (Bros).

They join Isaac Wang (Good Boys), Ming-Na Wen (The Book of Boba Fett), BD Wong (Jurassic World Dominion), James Hong (Everything Everywhere All At Once) and Matthew Rhys (The Americans).

The series, which has already been renewed for a second season, will explore the origins of the Mogwai and the Gremlins they turn into if people don’t follow a specific set of rules. It will be a prequel telling the story of how Gizmo’s owner Mr. Wing came to have him, but with Galligan’s involvement we could perhaps see the series move past Gremlins 2 to see where Billy and Gizmo are now.

The 10-episode series, which has Gremlins and Gremlins 2 director Joe Dante acting as a consultant, will take us “ back to 1920s Shanghai to reveal the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing (future shop owner Mr. Wing in the 1984 movie) met the young Mogwai called ‘Gizmo.’ Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are also pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.”
