Russell Crowe is The Pope’s Exorcist in first image from new horror

August 7, 2022 by Gary Collinson

Fresh from his turn as Zeus in Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder, Russell Crowe is now in production on his next role, also God-related, as he portrays the real life priest and Vatican exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth in The Pope’s Exorcist.

With production now underway on the horror, Sony Screen Gems has unveiled the first-look photo of Crowe as the Italian priest (see above), who is said to have performed over 100,000 exorcisms on behalf of the Vatican prior to his death aged 91 back in 2016. Plenty of franchise potential, then…

Overlord helmer Julius Avery is directing The Pope’s Exorcist from a script that’s passed through the hands of a bunch of writers, including Evan Spiliotopoulos , Chuck MacLean, Michael Petroni, Chester Hastings and R. Dean McCreary. Joining Crowe in the cast are Alex Essoe (Doctor Sleep) and Daniel Zovatto (It Follows).

The story of Father Gabriele Amorth was recently told in the documentary The Devil and Father Amorth from filmmaker William Friedkin, director of The Exorcist. As yet, there’s no word as to when we can expect this new film.
