Golden Globe winner Ke Huy Quan open to returning as Indiana Jones sidekick Short Round

January 11, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Fresh off his win at the Golden Globes, Ke Huy Quan has the world ahead of him.

The actor is on his way to a possible win at the Academy Awards, and he’s joining Loki Season 2, all part of his massive return to Hollywood brought on by Everything Everywhere All At Once. The actor is taking his renewed fame to look back at his career, even taking time from his Golden Globe speech for Best Supporting Actor to thank the man who launched his career, Steven Spielberg.

Steven Spielberg directed Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, the second installment in the franchise. He cast a young Ke Huy Quan as Short Round, the sidekick to Indiana Jones. This memorable role led to Quan joining The Goonies only a year later.

Recently, the actor spoke to the Happy Sad Confused podcast about his Temple of Doom character. He looks back at him fondly, even so much so that a return could be in the cards.

“I love the character of Short Round,” tells Quan. “He’s funny and courageous and saves Indy’s ass.” He adds, “If Disney or Lucasfilm ever come to me and say, ‘We want to do a Short Round spinoff,’ I’m there, man! I love that character so much, and it would just be incredible to revisit so many years later.”

When asked where he believes his character is now, Quan exclaims, “I have no idea where he is. Your guess is as good as mine. Just because he looks after Indy so much, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was an archeologist.”

Ke Huy Quan will have two television roles in 2023, starring as a TVA employee for two episodes of Loki Season 2 and American Born Chinese, where he’ll team with his Everything Everywhere All At Once co-star Michelle Yeoh. In 2024, he’s set to star in Netflix’s The Electric State from The Russo Brothers.

As we head into Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny this June, let’s see if they leave the door open for a possible Short Round cameo in the future. That’s if they haven’t already filmed something of course…

Starring along with Harrison Ford are Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”), Antonio Banderas (“Pain and Glory”), John Rhys-Davies (“Raiders of the Lost Ark”), Shaunette Renee Wilson (“Black Panther”), Thomas Kretschmann (“Das Boot”), Toby Jones (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”), Boyd Holbrook (“Logan”), Oliver Richters (“Black Widow”), Ethann Isidore (“Mortel”) and Mads Mikkelsen (“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore”).

Directed by James Mangold, the film is produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, and Simon Emanuel, with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas serving as executive producers. John Williams, who has scored each Indy adventure since the original “Raiders of the Lost Ark” in 1981, is once again composing the score.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny arrives in theaters on June 30th, 2023.
