Rian Johnson addresses adding The Muppets to a Knives Out movie

January 3, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Kermit The Frog and Benoit Blanc feel like a match made in heaven. It’s not just the internet that feels that way either; the Knives Out filmmaker himself loves the idea of it.

While promoting Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Rian Johnson addressed a long-running internet meme discussing the brilliant idea of adding The Muppets to an upcoming Knives Out sequel. Speaking to Netflix’s Tudum blog, the filmmaker says he’s thought long and hard about it but feels it just doesn’t work together as well as you might hope hope.

“It’s a joke that I thought was pretty brilliant, and I ended up really giving [it] some serious thought… As much as I take the murder mystery genre seriously, I take the genre of a Muppet movie seriously… I think those two things have very different rules. You can either have a Benoit Blanc mystery that has Muppets in it, but they’ll feel out of place. Or you can have a Muppet movie that Benoit Blanc is in, but it’ll feel like a Muppet movie,” explains Johnson.

When asked what would happen in this hypothetical movie, Johnson keeps mums. He “jokes, “I can’t reveal that. What if I do it someday?”
