DC’s Dead Boy Detectives series moves from HBO Max to Netflix

February 27, 2023 by Gary Collinson

Despite being granted a series order by HBO Max back in April of last year, the HBO Max adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Dead Boy Detectives has become another casualty of the new DC Studios regime – although unlike Batgirl and others, this one has managed to find a saviour in the form of Netflix.

As reported by THR, the DC drama series from Greg Berlanti (The Flash), Jeremy Carver (Doom Patrol) and Steve Yockey (The Flight Attendant) “didn’t fit with the new chapter of content that DC executives James Gunn and Peter Safran are building for the comic book powerhouse” – a slate which was revealed last month.

However, rather than cancelling the project – which has cast George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri as dead British teenagers Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland – producers Warner Bros. Television shopped Dead Boy Detectives to alternate outlets, with Netflix coming in to strike a deal to take the series from HBO Max.

Dead Boy Detectives is described as “a  fresh take on a ghost story that explores loss, grief and death through the lens of Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland … and their very alive friend, Crystal Palace (Kassius Nelson). It’s a lot like a vintage detective series — only darker and on acid.”

As yet, there’s no word as to when we can expect Dead Boy Detectives on Netflix.
