Spartacus returning with new sequel series at Starz

February 11, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Steven S. DeKnight wants to revisit the brutal world of Spartacus.

Deadline reports that DeKnight will return to his hit Starz series again, this time with a sequel series following the events of the original. For this still-untitled new series, the creators will look to explore uncharted territory and unique journeys of the original series’ iconic characters.

Following the defeat of Spartacus and his rebel army in the series finale, we shall see what happened in the shadow of Rome with a bloody tale of betrayal and deceit.

“It’s such an incredible honor to be invited to return to the world of Spartacus and to be met with unbridled creative support from my colleagues at Starz and Lionsgate,” said DeKnight in a statement. “Together, we are crafting something truly unique and unusual for the next chapter in this epic story.”

Starz is following the models of other streamers by returning to their most iconic franchise with a new version. Spartacus was a huge hit for Starz, bringing in solid ratings and decent reviews for a show of this nature. We’ve seen it with Showtime and Dexter/Billions universes, as well Amazon looking to further the world of Bosch.

“It has been over a decade since Spartacus delighted international audiences, and we are thrilled to reimagine and expand this gripping, action-packed drama for our viewers today,” said Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming, Starz. “Spartacus has deeply invested fans who are eager for its return, and we look forward to working with Steven on this exciting next chapter.”

The original Spartacus series starred the late Andy Whitfield, Liam McIntyre, John Hannah, Lucy Lawless, Manu Bennett, Peter Mensah, Nick E. Tarabay, Craig Parker, Viva Bianca, Katrina Law, Erin Cummings, and Jai Courtney. It ran from 2010 to 2013.
