James Cameron confirms he’s started work on Alita: Battle Angel 2 and more sequels

July 12, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Are you ready for more Alita: Battle Angel? Fans have clamored for a sequel to the 2019 film, but there’s been a bit of silence around the project in recent months.

Now, James Cameron has confirmed that not only is a sequel in development but there are multiple Battle Angel movies in the works. During a feature piece in Forbes, Cameron and his wife were asked about selling their current home, and this is where the Avatar filmmaker confirmed the move is in line with his recent productions.

The filmmaker says, “On Avatar, I’m working in Wellington and Los Angeles. And on the new Alita: Battle Angel films, I’ll be working in Austin, so it just didn’t make sense for us anymore.”

This marks the first official confirmation of an Alita sequel in quite some time. Last December, producer Jon Landau opened up about the project, saying, “We’d love to circle back and do a sequel to [Alita],” but now we have word from Cameron himself.

There’s also the small bit where he mentions multiple films, so they seem to be moving ahead with the budding franchise. While the film wasn’t a massive success in 2019, the cult following could propel the next entries to further heights. Look at this year’s Across The Spider-Verse doubling the box office haul of the first film in its first week; there’s room for well-liked but commercially overlooked films to have sequels that do well.

Alita: Battle Angel was based on Yukito Kishiro’s manga series Battle Angel Alita from a screenplay by Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis. It starred Rosa Salazar, Christoph Waltz, Keean Johnson, Mahershala Ali, Jennifer Connelly, Ed Skrein, and Jackie Earle Haley. Edward Norton also made a cameo appearance as the series’ main antagonist as set up for a sequel.

Do you want to see a sequel to Alita: Battle Angel? What do you think are the chances that it will ever happen? Let us know by heading to our social channels @flickeringmyth…
