Lily Collins to play Polly Pocket for Lena Dunham-directed Mattel movie

July 27, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Following the $400 million and counting for Barbie at the box-office, it was inevitable that Mattel would be rummaging through their toybox for the next IP to adapt for the big-screen, and one of the properties they’ve dusted off is diminutive ’80s dolly Polly Pocket.

Among a slew of project announcements reported by Variety, including Vin Diesel’s Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots and Tom Hanks’ Major Matt Mason, the next toy off the shelf will be Polly Pocket.

The titular doll will be brought to life by Emily in Paris and Mirror Mirror star Lily Collins, under the stewardship of writer/director Lena Dunham.

Oscar nominated producer Robbie Brenner, who runs Mattel Films and is developing all of their IP, from the J.J. Abrams produced Hot Wheels through to Daniel Kaluuya’s Barney movie, revealed that a “great script” had already been written and that “It’s been an amazing collaboration. Lena is so collaborative and rolls up her sleeves and really likes to roll around in notes and listen. She’s incredible. Lily is so smart and so specific and so productorial. It’s just been an incredible collaboration, so we are thrilled about it. Hopefully, we’ll be making that at some point in the future.”

Polly Pocket was an ’80s toy line that was acquired by Mattel in 1998, and survived multiple re-designs and discontinued ranges.
