Daredevil showrunner Steven DeKnight calls out Disney “scam” to reset contracts

September 21, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Steven DeKnight is calling out Disney for allegedly pulling out one of their more infamous money-saving schemes.

The showrunner behind the first season of Netflix’s Daredevil took to social media to discuss how Disney is handling the Daredevil reboot, including renaming the series to Daredevil: Born Again.

In a series of posts on X/Twitter, DeKnight declares, “It’s an old Disney scam where they slightly rename a series to reset contract terms back to first season. Needs to be addressed by all the guilds/unions and crushed!”

“From what I understand, I’m not going to see a penny from Daredevil: Born Again because they added the Born Again and can claim it’s a completely different show,” he explained. “You know, with the exact same two lead actors (who I love!) playing Daredevil and Fisk.”

He adds in an additional post, “To be clear, I can’t wait to see Charlie Cox and the amazing Vincent D’Onofrio reprise their iconic roles,” says DeKnight. “But to claim this is a complete reboot, and you don’t have to pay the original creatives is some corporate shenanigans, to say the least.”

He does. It’s an old Disney scam where they slightly rename a series to reset contract terms back to first season. Needs to be addressed by all the guilds/unions and crushed! https://t.co/Ttj4A3tnE4

Production on the show was indefinitely paused in June due to the WGA strike. The series remains out of production as the SAG-AFTRA strikes began. Matt Corman and Chris Ord are currently the showrunners of the new Daredevil series.

Many former Disney workers have discussed the Disney contract issue regarding resetting. Stars of Liv & Maddie recently spoke about the series undergoing a new name, Liv and Maddie: Cali Style, to avoid paying the actors more. Disney reportedly views a newly named series, even if it follows the original series, as a new show, allowing the studio to restart contracts for the talent.

Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again includes Netflix Marvel veterans Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Vincent D’Onofrio (Kingpin), and Jon Bernthal (The Punisher) in the series, while MCU newcomers include Sandrine Holt (American Gigolo) as Vanessa Fisk and Michael Gandolfini (The Many Saints of Newark), Margarita Levieva (The Deuce), Arty Froushan (Carnival Row), and Nikki M. James (The Book of Mormon) in as yet-unrevealed roles.

Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again is coming to Disney+ in 2024.
