Frank Darabont returns to directing for Stranger Things 5

April 27, 2024 by EJ Moreno

You can’t keep a good filmmaker away from some really strange things. The three-time Academy Awards nominee Frank Darabont is back, unretiring to come back for one more round of directing as he’ll team up with Netflix and The Duffer Brothers for Stranger Things.

The Insneider reports that Darabont returned to helm two episodes of the final season of Stranger Things, reportedly set to run eight episodes. It’s reportedly the third and fifth episodes, which are currently titled The Turbow Trap and Shock Jock.

The Duffers are helming episode one (The Crawl), episode two (The Vanishing of [REDACTED] Wheeler), and the fourth (Sorcerer). Longtime series producer Shawn Levy will helm the sixth episode titled Escape From Camazotz. The final episodes are not yet labeled.

In the Insneider report, we also learn the deal between the Duffers and Frank Darabont comes out of a place of kindness. Known for helming classics like The Shawshank Redemption, The Mist, and The Green Mile, Darabont soon found himself in “Director’s Jail,” falling into a lawsuit regarding The Walking Dead, which he created and later left.

Darabont, being a filmmaker so attached to the iconic Stephen King, makes him a perfect fit for the 80s-set Stranger Things, and he’ll add a sleek horror style to the soon-to-be-finished Netflix series.

Stranger Things is expected to return in 2025. Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, Priah Ferguson, Brett Gelman, Cara Buono, Amybeth McNulty and Jamie Campbell Bower will be back in the cast alongside new addition Linda Hamilton.
