Eddie Redmayne in talks for Harry Potter prequel spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

May 13, 2015 by Scott J. Davis

Outside of the news from the Star Wars spin-offs and the continued universe-expanding of Marvel, one franchise that still sets fans’ hearts racing is Harry Potter, and with author J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them being turned into a trilogy of films by the filmmakers behind the Potter saga, rumours abound about who may appear.

One report that had done the rounds earlier in the year was that Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) was rumoured to be the first choice for the role of Newt Scamander, and it seems those had some weight after all as the British actor is in negotiations for the film, and an offer has gone out to the star.

Fantastic Beasts takes place almost 70 years before the Harry Potter films, and the title refers to a book written by the character Redmayne would play, which is used by Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. David Yates, who directed the final four films in the Harry Potter series, returns to direct Beasts, with original producer David Heyman also producing the new film.

The Theory of Everything, for which Redmayne won the Best Actor Oscar for this year, is out now on Blu-ray and DVD in both the UK and USA.
