Sharlto Copley joins Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire

May 14, 2015 by Gavin Logan

Ben Wheatley’s hotly anticipated upcoming movie High Rise based on the acclaimed novel by J.G. Ballard and starring Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller and Luke Evans won’t be hitting the big screen until later this year but already the English director is gathering a stellar cast for his next project Free Fire.

Sharlto Copley (District 9, Chappie) announced via his Twitter that he has officially signed on for Free Fire, although he doesn’t give up any details about what the role is. The South African will join the likes of Armie Hammer (The Man From U.N.C.L.E.), Brie Larson (Short Term 12), Cillian Murphy (In the Heart of the Sea), Luke Evans (The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies) and long-time Wheatley journeyman Michael Smiley.

Set in Boston in 1978, Free Fire focusses on a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two gangs that turns into a shootout and a game of survival. Back in February it was confirmed that legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese had signed on as executive producer. Production is set to begin at the end of the year with the movie due for a release sometime in 2016.
