Tom Holland officially cast as Spider-Man, Jon Watts to direct solo film

June 23, 2015 by James Garcia

After a long search and months of casting updates, Marvel and Sony have officially found their new friendly neighborhood Spider-Man: Tom Holland. The 19 year-old Wolf Hall and The Impossible alum has long been in the running for the role, having gone up against actors like Asa Butterfield, Judah Lewis, Matthew Lintz, Charlie Plummer and Charlie Rowe.

Two weeks ago, news broke that Holland was Sony’s first choice for the role, but that Marvel was unsure. It seems that recent screen tests changed their minds and made him a lock for the beloved wall crawler. He’ll make his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in next year’s Captain America: Civil War.

In addition to Holland’s casting, it’s also been announced that Jon Watts (who helmed this year’s Sundance entry Cop Car) will helm the first new Spider-Man solo film, which is expected to hit theaters on July 28, 2017. Kevin Feige himself made the call to hire Watts, and released the following statement:

“As with James Gunn, Joss whedon and the Russo brothers, we love finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life. We spent a lot of time with Jon and find his take and work inspiring.”

In addition, Sony Pictures’ chairman Tom Rothman had this to say about the news:

“It’s a big day here at Sony. Kevin, Amy and their teams have done an incredible job. The Marvel process is very thorough, and that’s why their results are so outstanding. I’m confident that Spider-Man will be no exception. I’ve worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent. For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special.”

Tell us, are you happy that Tom Holland will play the next Spider-Man? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
