Taron Egerton says Elton John film Rocketman is a “fantasy musical” rather than a biopic

May 7, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Last month it was officially announced that Taron Egerton is set to take on the role of Elton John in Rocketman, a new film from director Dexter Fletcher (Eddie the Eagle) and producer Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman: The Secret Service).

While it had been assumed that the project was a biopic of the music icon, Egerton has now revealed to Collider that’s actually a “fantasy musical”:

“We are making a movie called Rocketman about Elton John’s formative years,” said Egerton. “Everyone thinks it’s a bio-pic. It isn’t. It’s a fantasy musical so it’s actually his songs used to express important beats in his life at emotional moments. He’s not the only character that sings. It’s going to be fun.”

“I’ve recorded some songs,” he continued. “I’ve been doing singing lessons. The next step is I need to think about choreography and trying to create some semblance of a performance that is at least reminiscent of him. I’m going to do [all of the singing]. I’m going to do it on set as well. We’re going to use a variety of techniques but I will always be singing on set. No miming. I’m just not interested in doing it that way.”

Egerton went on to reveal that filming on Rocketman is slated to get underway in August. Meanwhile, his next film Robin Hood is set for release this November [watch the trailer here].
