Rick Moranis to reprise his Dark Helmet role from Spaceballs for The Goldbergs

May 8, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Rick Moranis is set to take on his first acting role in over a decade this week as he returns to voice Spaceballs‘ iconic villain Dark Helmet in Wednesday’s episode of The Goldbergs.

The episode, airing on May 9th, will pay tribute to the classic 1987 Mel Brooks comedy see Adam (Sean Giambrone) encountering Dark Helmet in a dream where he promises to get a Spaceballs sequel produced.

“I truly think Rick Moranis gave the most underrated and brilliant comedic performance in any ‘80s movie as Dark Helmet,” said show creator Adam Goldberg. “I’ve been a lifelong fan of his work and became obsessed with having him reprise the role on my show. As an added bonus, maybe this even gets Spaceballs back in the conversation, and I can get my dream of helping make a sequel!”

Moranis – whose credits included the likes of Ghostbusters and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids – quit acting in 1997 to focus on his family, although he did take on a handful of voice roles in the following years, the last of which came in 2006 with Disney’s Brother Bear 2.
