Emilia Clarke says that Ron Howard “saved” Solo: A Star Wars Story

May 30, 2018 by Samuel Brace

One of the stars of Solo: A Star Wars Story, Emilia Clarke, has said that Ron Howard “saved” the movie when he came aboard.

The production issues Solo faced are well documented and now that the film is out in cinemas, we are starting to get even more insight into what happened before and after Ron Howard replaced Phil Lord and Christopher Miller as director.

Clarke, who plays Qi’ra in Solo, has told Vanity Fair that she believes Howard “saved” the film and was very important to her personally, especially compared to the direction she was receiving before Howard was hired.

“I’m not gonna lie,” Clarke said. “I struggled with Qi’ra quite a lot. I was like: ‘Y’all need to stop telling me that she’s “film noir,” because that ain’t a note.’”

“All hail to [Lucasfilm president] Kathy [Kennedy] for hiring Ron,” Clarke continued, before recalling a helpful conversation between her and Howard about Qi’ra. “He even feigned enthusiasm! I know for a fact he had that discussion with everybody. I think we all came to set feeling like his favorite. It makes for a really happy load of actors, with our egos.”

This is certainly high praise for the veteran director and quite possibly a jab at the two men who Howard replaced. There’s no question that Clarke was very happy with the decision to bring Howard onboard.
