Rumour: The Flash movie to feature The Rogues, Jay Garrick, lower stakes and a comedic tone

June 5, 2018 by Gary Collinson

With reports circulating that Warner Bros. and DC Films have decided to drop the Flashpoint storyline for The Flash in favour of a more traditional solo movie, some new rumours have surfaced on Reddit (via CBM), which cover the film’s tone, villains, and potential castings.

According to the report – which we advise taking with a pinch of salt – John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have produced a “very comedic” and straightforward script with deliberate “lower stakes” than what we’ve seen in Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

Apparently, the script sees the Scarlet Speedster going up against The Rogues, consisting of Captain Cold, Mirror Master and Weather Wizard. Daley and Goldstein are said to be looking to fill these parts with actors who have “dramatic and comedic chops” and that Channing Tatum is on the wishlist for the role of Captain Cold.

The original Flash Jay Garrick is also said to be part of the script, and will serve in a “mentor role” to Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen (whether that is as a speedster or not is unclear). The studio is reportedly looking to cast a A-list actor a la Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise for the role.

Other details offered up in the report are the return of Billy Crudup as Henry Allen and Kiersey Clemons as Iris West (something Clemons herself confirmed last week), as well as a possible 2020 release date, which would make sense given that the DCEU slate is filled through to the end of 2019 with Aquaman, Shazam and Wonder Woman 2.

Given the source it’s entirely possible that this rumour is little more than speculation / fabrication, but hopefully we’ll get some official news on Warner’s plans for The Flash in the very near future.

What do you make of these rumours? Are you still holding out hope for a Flashpoint movie, or do you think a straightforward solo adventure is a better way to go at this point? As always, let us know your thoughts in the comments…
