Andy Muschietti replaces Cary Fukunaga as director on Stephen King’s It

July 16, 2015 by Justin Cook

It looks like the job left open when Cary Fukunaga (True Detective) decided to leave the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s It has just been filled by director Andy Muschietti.

Muschietti, who is in talks to helm the film for New Line Cinema, is best known for 2013’s Mama, a horror film starring Jessica Chastain and produced by Guillermo del Toro. The film was not only a major box office success, but it also received fairly positive reviews from critics as well.

Fukunaga had a very ambitious idea for his version of It, wanting to split the story into two separate films. He eventually dropped out as director in May over creative differences with the studio.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, We’re the Millers actor Will Poulter is no longer on board to play the role of Pennywise the Clown, but there is still a chance he may return if the scheduling works out. It is also expected that New Line will hire a new writer to rework the project’s script very soon.

Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Seth Grahame-Smith and Jeffrey Katzenberg will produce, most likely along with Muschietti’s sister Barbara Muschietti.
