Rugrats returns with new animated series and live-action movie

July 18, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Nickelodeon and Paramount Pictures are set to revive the classic 90s animated series Rugrats, which will include a new 26 episode TV series, as well as a live-action film featuring CGI characters.

Deadline reports that both the series and the movie will see the return of Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil, Susie and Angelica, as well as introducing a new world of characters. Original series creators Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó and Paul Germain will produce the new series, while David A. Goodman is penning the screenploay for the film.

“Rugrats is hands-down one of the most celebrated cartoons in TV history, and we are thrilled for a whole new audience to meet these iconic characters in brand-new adventures,” said Sarah Levy, COO, Viacom Media Networks; and Interim President, Nickelodeon. “What was true in 1991 when the original show premiered is still true today: kids are fascinated with the world of babies. We can’t wait for today’s kids to meet Tommy, Chuckie and pals.”

“Now feels like the ideal time to reintroduce this iconic cast of characters to a whole new generation of young fans,” added Brian Robbins, President of Paramount Players. “Kids who grew up with Tommy Pickles and the Rugrats crew will now be able to share that experience with their own children.”

Rugrats launched in 1991, and ran for nine season over 13 years, as well as spawning animated features in 1998, 2000 and 2003. The new movie has been set for release on November 13th 2020.
