Amy Poehler to star in sports comedy film written by Ike Barinholtz

July 24, 2015 by William Fanelli

The always-busy Amy Poehler is at it again, starring in an upcoming yet-to-be-titled sports comedy film, written by David Stassen and Ike Barinholtz.

With her latest buddy comedy Sisters — in which she stars with friend and fellow SNL alum Tina Fey — having been recently completed, the void in Poehler’s schedule will likely be filled with the demands of the new Universal Pictures film, which the comedienne is also set to produce.

There aren’t a whole lot of details surrounding the project at the moment but according to Deadline, Poehler will play “a once-promising basketball coach” who deals with all sorts of pressures as she takes on the opportunity to lead an NBA basketball team backed by a somewhat reluctant parent organization. Barinholtz, who broke out as Ivan Dochenko in Danny McBride’s Eastbound & Down, is also said to play an unspecified role in the movie.

Poehler’s Paper Kite Productions is behind the film with Brooke Posch exec producing alongside Barinholtz and David Stassen. This will serve as the latter duo’s second pairing as producers and their fourth coupling together as writers (Megawinner, The Mindy Project, the newly announced Police Academy: Next Generation and the now-filming Central Intelligence).

The aforementioned comedy Sisters, which lists Barinholtz among its supporting cast, sees Poehler and Fey playing siblings who decide to throw one last bash prior to their parents selling their childhood home. The movie co-stars Kate McKinnon, John Cena, Madison Davenport, John Leguizamo, Maya Rudolph, James Brolin and Dianne Wiest and is set to hit theaters on Christmas day. The highly-anticipated Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp prequel series starring Poehler and the rest of her original Wet Hot cast members debuts July 31.
