Deadpool 2 director discusses the big X-Men cameo

August 26, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Among the numerous cameos in this year’s superhero sequel Deadpool 2 was an appearance from the X-Men, with James McAvoy (Professor X), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler) and Evan Peters (Quicksilver) popping up ever so briefly in the X-Mansion.

Speaking to Den of Geek, director David Leitch has revealed how the scene was crafted, with Leitch directing Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson and X-Men: Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg shooting the X-Men elements:

“So, the set supervisor, Dan Glass, who did the Matrix films, he came up with this idea of doing a composite, and getting the plates to match. So we shot our side here, and we sent the measurements and the camera positions and things up to Simon’s team on Dark Phoenix, and they shot the plate for that there. Then we put the two together. So actually it turned out to be easier than we thought. If we would have had to get all those people in the room it probably wouldn’t have happened.”

Leitch was also asked about the absence of Jean Grey, stating that: “It might have been one of those things where we’re up against it, and it’s like, who’s available that day by the time we had to get the shot and get it down to us… we’re grateful to have anyone we could get at that point.”

Marvel’s motormouth mercenary is back! Bigger, better and occasionally more pantless than ever before. When a super soldier arrives on a murderous mission, Deadpool is forced to think about friendship, family and what it really means to be a hero – all while kicking 50 shades of ass. Because, sometimes, to do the right thing you need to fight dirty.

Deadpool 2 sees David Leitch (John Wick) directing a cast that includes returning stars Ryan Reynolds (Wade Wilson), Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), T.J. Miller (Weasel), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), Stefan Kapicic (Colossus), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al) and Karan Soni (Dopinder) alongside new additions Zazie Beetz (Atlanta) as Domino, Josh Brolin (Avengers: Infinity War) as Cable, Terry Crews (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) as Bedlam, Lewis Tan (Iron Fist) as Shatterstar, Bill Skarsgard (It) as Zeitgeist, Rob Delaney (Catastrophe), Julian Dennison (Hunt for the Wilderpeople) as Russell, Jack Kesy (The Strain) as Black Tom Cassidy and Shioli Kutsuna (The Outsider) as Yukio.
