Exclusive Interview – Actor-Director Harley Di Nardo talks Dead Envy

August 30, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

Flickering Myth chats with director Harley Di Nardo about his new film Dead Envy…

Can you tell us about the movie Dead Envy?

Sure. Dead Envy is a stalker/thriller set in a hair salon, featuring some really cool music. It also plays on the conscious of which we still long for… one more shot at our dreams before it’s too late.

It has been stated that Dead Envy is semi-autobiographical. Can you elaborate?

Yes, it is. I am hairstylist. I own a salon in Malibu and have had salons in New York. I also have been making and recording music for most of my adult life. I’ve had a couple of albums out. The stalker part, I‘ll leave up to your imagination…!

What was it like working with some of the cast?

I was thrilled with the way the cast turned out. As with any music video or film, you hope that the actors you cast will be the right people for the job. I was super happy with the way the cast for Dead Envy conducted themselves. They showed up prepared and just killed it. One of the many things I took away from this experience is that I have a pretty good eye for talent.

Were there any hiccups along the way?

When are there not? Hehe… We got into the editing and I started doing it myself, because, you know… I can edit! But Meghan, our producer, just said… “You’re too close to it. You need to let someone else edit this.” I fought it at first. I was adamant about it, but in the end, we had Anderson Boyd step in to edit. And then we all started arguing, as you do, but it was all for the greater good of the project. He did an amazing job at editing the film.

Finally, what would you hope that audience members take away from Dead Envy, and indeed your work in general?

My hope is that people can see what I see. That is my biggest feeling of accomplishment. When someone tells me the influences they see, and they are the same as what is in my head. I love that. I’d like to a have a good-sized audience that I can consistently make films for. People that appreciate and enjoy the work and look forward to your next one.

What is next for you?

At the moment I am working on a paranormal thriller about a young, single mom that is continually attacked by a sexual demon. She must find a way to get away… It’s going to be scary and exciting!

Harley Di Nardo, thank you very much!
