Junkie XL will compose Mortal Engines score

September 6, 2018 by Ricky Church

Junkie XL has signed on to compose the score for the upcoming sci-fi film Mortal Engines. The film, which will be released in December, comes from Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh and producers and is directed by Jackson’s protege Christian Rivers. Junkie XL, real name Tom Holkenborg, announced the news via his Twitter page.

Friends, I'm proud to announce that I am working on the original score to the upcoming film @Mortal_Engines, produced by Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh (Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, King Kong) and directed by Christian Rivers. https://t.co/Jj9EkjY2hx

“It’s a dream come true working w/Christian & being welcomed into Peter’s Wingnut family,” Junkie said on Twitter. “Traveling to their facility in New Zealand has been nothing short of mind-blowing, I feel like I’ve learned more about moviemaking in the past 6 months than most could hope to in a lifetime. I am extraordinarily grateful to Peter, Fran and Christian for this opportunity and their friendship. Scoring Mortal Engines pushed me to my limits, it’s an incredible project to be part of. The film comes out Friday, December 14. Hope you can enjoy it in theaters!”

Junkie XL’s past work includes the scores for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which he worked on with Hans Zimmer, Deadpool and this year’s Tomb Raider reboot. His most famous score though, and perhaps the one most loved by fans, is for Mad Max: Fury Road.

Thousands of years after civilization was destroyed by a cataclysmic event, humankind has adapted and a new way of living has evolved.  Gigantic moving cities now roam the Earth, ruthlessly preying upon smaller traction towns.  Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan)—who hails from a Lower Tier of the great traction city of London—finds himself fighting for his own survival after he encounters the dangerous fugitive Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar).  Two opposites, whose paths should never have crossed, forge an unlikely alliance that is destined to change the course of the future.

Mortal Engines is set to hit cinemas on December 14th 2018 and sees Peter Jackson protege Christian Rivers directing a cast that includes Hera Hilmar (Da Vinci’s Demons), Stephen Lang (Avatar), Hugo Weaving (The Lord of the Rings), Robbie Sheehan (Fortitude), Ronan Raftery (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Leila George (Mother, May I Sleep With Danger?), Jihae (Mars), Colin Salmon (Limitless), Patrick Malahide (Game of Thrones) and Rege-Jean Page (Roots).
