Why the final season of Games of Thrones is taking so long

September 18, 2018 by Samuel Brace

David Benioff and Dan Weiss, the co-showrunners on Game of Thrones, have discussed why it is that the final season is taking so long to make.

Now that we know the next season of Game of Thrones will be its last, it’s no surprise that fans are eager to see just how it all ends as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, the final season is taking its time in coming to our screens, not airing until 2019.

Why exactly are things taking so long? Well, co-showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss spoke to Deadline backstage at the Emmys (where the show won Outstanding Drama Series and well as Outstanding Supporting Actor for Peter Dinklahe), with Benioff saying:

“The final season’s taking a long time because it’s the biggest thing we’ve ever done. It was nearly a full year in Belfast either prepping it or actually shooting it. I think when people see it they’re going to understand why it took so long. The last season is far beyond what we’ve ever attempted before.”

The last season of the show might only be six episodes long but if it can live up to the scale and ambition alluded to by the showrunners, it should be some farewell.
