Bryan Singer in talks to direct Red Sonja movie

September 21, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Having been fired from the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody by 20th Century Fox this past December, it looks like Bryan Singer may be nearing a return to the director’s chair for the long-gestating Red Sonja reboot.

According to THR, Singer is in talks with Millennium to direct the film, which has been scripted by X-Men: First Class writer Ashley Miller and is being viewed as a potential franchise which Millennium hopes can capture the same audience as Wonder Woman.

Singer has been plagued by sexual misconduct allegations and lawsuits over the past few years, and according to THR’s sources, Red Sonja “is seen as a step toward rehabilitating the director’s image.” Should he sign on, it is expected that the project will be fast-tracked into production.

Red Sonja is loosely based on Conan creator Robert E. Howard’s Red Sonya of Rogantino, and debuted in the Marvel Comics series Conan the Barbarian #23 in 1973. Brigitte Nielsen portrayed the character in the 1985 feature film.

A new Red Sonja movie has been in development for over a decade at Millennium, with Robert Rodriguez announcing back in 2008 that he would direct his then girlfriend Rose McGowan in the title role.
