DC’s Birds of Prey finds its Huntress and Black Canary

September 26, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Following on from yesterday’s release date announcement, we now have some major casting news on Warner Bros. and DC Films’ girl gang movie Birds of Prey.

As revealed by Deadline, Warner and director Cathy Yan have found their Huntress in Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Fargo), while Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Underground) will portray the Black Canary.

Both actresses were part of a recent shortlist, which states that Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers), Cristin Milioti (Black Mirror) and Sofia Boutella (The Mummy) were also reading for Huntress and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (The Cloverfield Paradox) was in contention for Black Canary.

The remaining lead role is that of Renee Montoya, and Justina Machado (Jane the Virgin) and Roberta Colindrez (I Love Dick) are reportedly under consideration for that part.

Margot Robbie is reprising her Suicide Squad role as Harley Quinn in the film, which will reportedly take place in “a Gotham that isn’t protected by Batman” and will see the femme fatales battling a crime lord, heavily rumoured to be Black Mask.

What do you make of these castings, and are you looking forward to seeing the Birds of Prey assemble? Let us know in the comments below…
