World War Z sequel aiming for June 2019 production start date

October 14, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Now, we’ve been down this road before on a couple of occasions, so you may not want to get too excited just yet, but it seems the oft-delayed World War Z sequel may finally be about to escape Development Hell.

Speaking to Variety, producers Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner have revealed that a June 2019 production start date has been set, with both Brad Pitt and his Se7en, Fight Club and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button director David Fincher still on board.

Kleiner went on to state that work continues on the screenplay for the follow-up to the 2013 zombie blockbuster, with Dennis Kelly (Utopia) rewriting an original draft from Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders).

The first World War Z shrugged aside production troubles to gross $540 million worldwide back in 2013, with the sequel announced almost immediately. However, it subsequently encountered a number of setbacks, the latest coming earlier this year when production was pushed back from this year due to Fincher’s commitments to Mindhunter and Brad Pitt’s role in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
