WarnerMedia to launch new subscription streaming service

October 14, 2018 by Gary Collinson

It looks like WarnerMedia is set to follow The Walt Disney Company into the world of subscription streaming, with parent company AT&T announcing plans to launch a brand new direct-to-consumer streaming video service featuring Warner’s vast film and TV libraries.

“We are committed to launching a compelling and competitive product that will serve as a complement to our existing businesses and help us to expand our reach by offering a new choice for entertainment with the WarnerMedia collection of films, television series, libraries, documentaries and animation loved by consumers around the world,” said WarnerMedia’s John Stankey.

WarnerMedia is said to be foregoing future licensing deals with rivals such as Netflix in order to retain and reacquire rights to its library of titles, including those through Warner Bros., Turning Broadcasting, and HBO. There’s no word yet if and how the new service may affect the recently launched DC Universe, although presumably all DC content will be kept separate should DC Universe continue to be a success.

If everything goes according to plan, the WarnerMedia subscription service will launch towards the end of 2019.
