Andrew Lincoln to lead three Walking Dead movies as AMC looks to expand the franchise

November 5, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Coming hot on the heels of his final appearance in the main TV show, AMC has announced that Andrew Lincoln will be reprising his role as Rick Grimes for three TV movies set within the world of The Walking Dead.

“There is more story to tell and we’ll be telling it,” said TWD’s chief content officer Scott M. Gimple, who will be writing the first of Rick’s solo films. “The story of Rick will go on in films. Right now, we’re working on three but there’s flexibility in that… Over the next several years, we’re going to be doing specials, new series are quite a possibility, high-quality digital content and then some content that defies description at the moment. We’re going to dig into the past and see old characters. We’re going to introduce new characters and new situations.”

When Lincoln announced his intention to leave the show, the original plan was to kill off his character; however, in last night’s episode ‘What Comes Next’, Rick appeared to sacrifice himself… only to be rescued by Jadis and whisked away in a helicopter. The TV movies will reportedly pick up his story from this point, through to the time jump we witnessed at the end of the episode and beyond.

“[The aim is for a] large, big scope movie that will feel like a major motion picture,” said AMC programming president David Madden. “There is a multiple-year plan that could include additional series, digital content and specials. We’re looking to broaden this into a universe where the movies that Andy will be in are the highest-profile things that we do.”
