Tom Cruise reportedly learning to actually fly fighter jets for Top Gun: Maverick

November 11, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Despite the fact that cameras have been rolling on Top Gun: Maverick, it was announced back in August that production on the sequel to the 80s action classic would be going on hiatus, with Paramount pushing back the release of the film a year to 2020.

At the time, it was reported that the delay was to allow its cast more time for training, and if a report from The Sun is to be believed, it seems that training may involve Tom Cruise actually learning to fly fighter jets for his second outing as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell.

“Tom is well known for doing his own stunts and the Top Gun sequel is no different,” claims The Sun’s ‘source’. “He prides himself on making the action sequences as realistic as possible… He won’t film all the flight sequences, it’s too dangerous, but he will fly some, making him the first actor in cinema history to do so.”

It’s worth pointing out that The Sun isn’t the most reliable of sources, although given the lengths that Cruise goes to in his efforts to strive for realism, then it’s certainly not beyond the realm of possibility that we’ll see him taking flight in Top Gun 2.
