Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet expected to gross $70 million plus over Thanksgiving weekend

November 21, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

Wreck-It Ralph and Vanellope von Schweetz return to the big screen today with the U.S. release of Ralph Breaks the Internet, Disney’s follow-up to the hit 2012 animated movie, and according to box office tracking from Deadline the sequel is looking very likely to outperform its predecessor over its opening weekend.

Analysts are projecting a five-day Thanksgiving haul of $70 million for the film, well up from the $56.7 million debut of the original Wreck-It Ralph. However, that estimate may well prove to be conservative, as Fandango data shows the the film is topping fellow Disney Thanksgiving releases Coco ($72.9 million) and Moana ($82 million) in terms of advance ticket sales.

The first Wreck-It Ralph finished its domestic box office run with $189.4 million, adding a further $281.8 million internationally for a worldwide gross of $471.2 million.

Ralph Breaks the Internet leaves Litwak’s video arcade behind, venturing into the uncharted, expansive and thrilling world of the internet – which may or may not survive Ralph’s wrecking. Video game bad guy Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) and fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman) must risk it all by traveling to the world wide web in search of a replacement part to save Vanellope’s video game, Sugar Rush. In way over their heads, Ralph and Vanellope rely on the citizens of the internet – the netizens – to help navigate their way, including a website entrepreneur named Yesss (voice of Taraji P. Henson), who is the head algorithm and the heart and soul of the trendmaking site “BuzzzTube”.

Ralph Breaks the Internet is being directed by Rich Moore and Phil Johnston (a writer on the original movie), and will see John C. Reilly joined by returning voice stars Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer and Jane Lynch.
