She may be sitting out Mary Poppins Returns, but the legendary Julie Andrews will be back on the big screen next month, in voice form at least.
As revealed by Variety, Andrews is set to voice a key role in the DC Extended Universe blockbuster Aquaman, where she will portray Karathen, a mythical sea creature who helps Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry.
“We wanted the Karathen to have the voice of a classic British actress, albeit somewhat digitally altered,” said producer Peter Safran. “And when we found out Julie was interested and available and excited to do it, casting her was a no-brainer.”
Aquaman will find itself going head-to-headline with Mary Poppins Returns over the Christmas period, with the latter seeing Emily Blunt take on the role played by Andrews in the original 1964 classic.

Aquaman is directed by James Wan (The Conjuring) and stars Jason Momoa as the titular hero, reprising his role from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, along with Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Willem Dafoe as Dr. Vulko, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry, Ludi Lin as Murk, Michael Beach as Jesse Kane, Djimon Hounsou as the Fisherman King, Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin, Otis Dhanji as a young Arthur Curry, Julie Andrews as Karathen and Graham McTavish in an as-yet-unrevealed role. It is set for release on December 14th in the UK and December 21st in North America.
