Netflix planning to produce around 90 original movies per year

According to a report in The New York Times, streaming giant Netflix is looking to produce a whopping 90 films in 2019, with 55 being live-action features and the remaining 35 split between documentaries and animated movies.

The films will be split across two groups: Originals, which will be budgeted anywhere between $20 million and $200 million; and Indies, which will have budgets of up to $20 million and will be aimed at specific audiences, such as rom-coms and genre fare like horror.

“If you’re going to build a great film studio, you have to build it with great filmmakers,” said Scott Stuber, who runs Netflix’s movie division. “We’re trying to build a new studio that is exciting for artists. As we do that, it’s important to be open to criticism. When a great artist says, ‘Hey, this doesn’t work,’ then we’d better try to fix it. For some of our filmmakers, that means having a theatrical release and contending for awards.”

Among the titles Netflix has incoming in 2019 are Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, Michael Bay’s Six Underground, Steven Soderbergh’s The Laundromat, J.C. Chandor’s Triple Frontier, Dee Rees’ The Last Thing He Wanted and the Adam Sandler/Jennifer Aniston rom-com Murder Mystery.
