Captain Marvel producer discusses James Gunn’s early involvement with the film

January 10, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Jonathan Schwartz, an executive producer for Captain Marvel, has commented on James Gunn’s early involvement in the film.

Of course, we all know the story of James Gunn by now and how he was fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 by Disney for past comments on social media and has now found himself working on DC’s Suicide Squad follow up.

Guardians of the Galaxy wasn’t the only property he used to be involved with, however, as Gunn was also kind of overseeing the cosmic wing of the MCU. But did he have much involvement with Captain Marvel before he left? Here is what executive producer Jonathan Schwartz had to say about it during a set visit (via Screen Rant):

“I think he’s read the script, we talked to him about it a little bit. It takes place before a lot of what he’s doing happens, so I’m sure the Skrulls will be a fun toy to play with at some point. But I think we’ve really been able to do our own thing. But we love when James gives input for sure.”

It should be noted that James Gun was still with Marvel at the time of this set visit and of course, his plans for the cosmic wing of Marvel will now never come to fruition.

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

Captain Marvel is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Mississippi Grind) and sees Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island) leading the cast as Carol Danvers alongside Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lashana Lynch (Fast Girls), Gemma Chan (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Algenis Perez Soto (Sambá), Rune Temte (Eddie The Eagle), McKenna Grace (I, Tonya), Annette Bening (American Beauty), Ana Ayora (The Big Wedding), Vik Sahay (Chuck), Kenneth Mitchell (Star Trek: Discovery), Chuku Modo (The Good Doctor), Clark Gregg (The Avengers) and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald). It is set for release on March 8th.
