EA scraps its open world Star Wars video game plans

January 17, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Back in October of 2017, Electronic Arts announced that it was closing down its Visceral Games studio, with the company revealing that it would be retooling the Dead Space developer’s long-planned Star Wars video game from director Amy Henning (Uncharted).

It was said at the time that EA felt the game was becoming too linear, and that EA Vancouver would be taking charge of the project and overhauling it to present a more open world experience in the galaxy far, far away.

Well, we now have some bad news for those fans who’ve been waiting patiently on the game, as Kotaku is reporting that EA has now decided to cancel its plans entirely.

According to the site, the game would have seen players taking on the role of a scoundrel or bounty hunter, allowing them to explore various planets and work with different factions from the Star Wars universe. However, the publisher apparently felt that they needed a game to be ready for release earlier, and opted to work on a smaller-scale project which could be completed by late 2020.

EA has since issued a statement, which seems to confirm that the game has indeed been scrapped, although elements of it will likely be reworked into other Star Wars titles:

There’s been speculation overnight about one of our Star Wars projects. As a natural part of the creative process, the great work by our team in Vancouver continues and will evolve into future Star Wars content and games. We’re fully committed to making more Star Wars games, we’re very excited about Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order from Respawn, and we’ll share more about our new projects when the time is right.

Next up from EA is the aforementioned Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which is slated for release in the 2019 Holiday Season. Details are scarce, but it has been revealed that the game will take place shortly after the events of Revenge of the Sith and follow a Padawan in the aftermath of Order 66.
