Jon Favreau shares an image of a familiar Star Wars droid from the set of The Mandalorian

January 30, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Last month, The Mandalorian executive producer Jon Favreau revealed that IG-88 is set to make an appearance in the upcoming live-action Star Wars series, but it seems the fan favourite bounty hunter won’t be the only familiar droid to feature in the Disney+ show.

Favreau has shared a photo to Instagram from the set of The Mandalorian featuring R5-D4, the astromech droid with a bad motivator who is originally sold by the Jawas to Owen Lars in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.

In canon, it turns out that R5 deliberately sacrifices his sale in order to assist R2-D2 with his mission for the Rebellion, so let’s hope he gets his moment to shine in The Mandalorian!

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

The Mandalorian is expected to premiere on Disney+ in late 2019 and sees Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones) leading a cast that includes Gina Carano (Deadpool), Carl Weathers (Rocky), Nick Nolte (Afflication), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Emily Swallow (Supernatural), Omid Abtahi (American Gods) and Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man).
