R.I.P. Albert Finney (1936 – 2019)

February 8, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Oscar-nominated British actor Albert Finney has passed away aged 82, his family has announced.

“Albert Finney, aged 82, passed away peacefully after a short illness with those closest to him by his side,” reads the announcement. “The family request privacy at this sad time.”

A graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Finney began his film career in 1960, and would go on to receive five Academy Award nominations – four for Best Actor for Tom Jones, Murder on the Orient Express, The Dresser and Under the Volcano, and once for Best Supporting Actor for Erin Brockovich.

Finney would also receive two BAFTA Awards, for Most Promising Newcomer for 1960’s Saturday Night and Sunday Morning and Best Actor for the 2002 BBC/HBO TV movie The Gathering Storm, where he portrayed Winston Churchill in a role that also saw him honoured with an Emmy and a Golden Globe.

Other credits during his illustrious career include Scrooge, Annie, Miller’s Crossing, Big Fish, The Bourne Ultimatum, The Bourne Legacy and Skyfall, the latter of which proved to be his final role.
