The script for Captain Marvel almost began with Carol Danvers on Earth according to the film’s co-director Ryan Fleck.
Origin stories are always tricky and with Captain Marvel, they decided to go for a less traditional approach and begin the tale somewhere in the middle, with Carol already with the Kree and possessing her powers.
However, this wasn’t always the plan for the movie as co-director Ryan Fleck has revealed that the film once began with Carol on Earth when she was a pilot in the US Air Force. Speaking to Empire, Fleck said:
“The original opening to the script was a simulated combat situation in her fighter jets. There was a whole Top Gun-style sequence that we were even planning to shoot for a while. Even though it was an awesome introduction to Carol and Maria Rambeau – and I think it would have been fun for the audience to meet them on Earth as humans – the problem with that is the audience would be so far ahead of the story.
“But you would have already known, and viscerally felt, her as a human. When she is uncovering her past and feeling a bit freaked out by it, I think it’s much more effective.”

It certainly would have changed the film in a pretty dramatic way if the movie was told in a more straightforward start to finish manner. What do you think? Was the way Captain Marvel began the right approach?
