Respawn responds to Apex Legends Season 1 Battle Pass critics

March 19, 2019 by Patrick Nolan

Lee Horn from Respawn Entertainment has responded to criticism levelled at the newly released Battle Pass for Apex Legends.

The Apex Legends Battle Pass, which has just been released today, has faced some criticism for the rewards it offers players. The Battle Pass provides a tiered reward system that is purchasable with in-game currency which can be earned both in game or through a purchase with real money. A similar system is used for other popular Battle Royale games such as Fortnite and PlayerUnknowns’ Battlegrounds. A Battle Pass allows players to unlock extra cosmetic items, such as skins, as they play the game.

Criticism of the pass revolves around the scarcity of the rewards that are currently available. As of right now the Season 1 Pass offers rewards that some players have described as “cheap filler.” Another Reddit post, with over 6000 upvotes, points out that the number of badges and stat displays that are unlockable through the Battle Pass fill a substantial portion of the Battle Pass’ content. These posts suggest that the community were expecting a greater number of skins or special animations for their characters.

Lead Product Manager, Lee Horn, was quick to respond to the criticism. Horn defended the rewards system stating that, “In terms of rewards, we’ve tried to create a Battle Pass where first-time spenders can get a strong base of weapon and character cosmetics to fill out their initial collection at a deep discount.” He also promised that the Battle Pass would likely see improvement in future seasons saying that, “Season 1 is just the first version on a long road of improvements, updates and tweaks.”

The Season 1 update also added some other new content in the form of a new character. The latest addition to the Legends roster is named Octane and he has several abilities that enhance his mobility; he also possesses the ability to passively regenerate health without the need for medical supplies like other characters do.
