Avengers: Endgame co-director explains how time travel works in the MCU

May 2, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Joe Russo, the co-director of Avengers: Endgame, has attempted to explain how the film’s time travel works, particularly regarding Captain America’s ending. Spoilers follow…

Avengers: Endgame has a pretty complicated storyline without throwing time travel into the mix but with this extra ingredient, there are certain aspects of the film that might require a little explaining.

Some fans have a few questions about the film’s ending, specifically regarding Captain America and how he stayed in the past to live his life with Peggy, then turning up as an old man in the ‘present’. In a recent Q&A, Joe Russo attempted to explain how this works:

“It’s not a time loop. Both Ancient One and Hulk were right. You can’t change the future by simply going back to past. But it’s possible to create a different alternate future. It’s not butterfly effect. Every decision you made in the past could potentially create a new timeline. For example, the old Cap at the end movie, he lived his married life in a different universe from the main one. He had to make another jump back to the main universe at the end to give the shield to Sam.”
