Lionsgate developing sequel to Sicario

September 22, 2015 by Justin Cook

Following the film’s strong US box office debut this past weekend, Lionsgate is reportedly developing a sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario, this time around focusing on Benicio Del Toro’s mysterious hitman character Alejandro.

Villeneuve will be involved with the project in some way, although it is unclear at the time if he will be back on board to direct; furthermore, Taylor Sheridan, who wrote the thriller, will be overseeing the new project.

In only six theaters, Sicario managed to pull in $401,288 from September 18-20, making its per theater average of $66,881 the highest of the year. The film will slowly expand to more and more theaters over the next couple of weeks before it receives a wide release on October 2nd.

On top of Del Toro, Sicario also stars Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, Jon Bernthal, Jeffrey Donovan and Victor Garber. Many believe that Blunt, Brolin and especially Del Toro are all Oscar contenders this year, as their performances have earned a substantial amount of acclaim from critics.

In Mexico, SICARIO means hitman. In the lawless border area stretching between the U.S. and Mexico, an idealistic FBI agent [Emily Blunt] is enlisted by an elite government task force official [Josh Brolin] to aid in the escalating war against drugs. Led by an enigmatic consultant with a questionable past [Benicio Del Toro], the team sets out on a clandestine journey forcing Kate to question everything that she believes in order to survive.

Del Toro was recently cast as a major character in 2017’s Star Wars: Episode VIII, and will also be appearing in Terrence Malick’s upcoming untitled film and Harmony Korine’s The Trap.
