Rocketman director considered a Rami Malek Freddie Mercury cameo

June 15, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Director Dexter Fletcher has revealed that he considered bringing together two of music’s biggest icons in this year’s Elton John film Rocketman.

Having stepped in to complete Bohemian Rhapsody following Bryan Singer’s firing, Fletcher gave some thought to have Rami Malek reprising his Oscar-winning role as Freddie Mercury for a brief cameo in a scene alongside Taron Egerton’s Elton John.

“There was an idea I had [at] one point, where Elton’s in a restaurant with his mother,” said Fletcher (via Deadline). “I thought John Reid and Freddie could be at another table and they wave at each other! That would have been amazing, but it didn’t come to pass. It would’ve been a little too knowing. I’m not looking to set out to make a cinematic universe!”

The John Reid that Fletcher refers to is the manager of both Elton John and Queen, portrayed by Richard Madden and Aidan Gillen in Rocketman and Bohemian Rhapsody respectively.

Rocketman features a cast that includes Taron Egerton (Robin Hood), Jamie Bell (Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool), Richard Madden (Game of Thrones), and Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom).
