Spider-Man: Far From Home’s Tom Holland couldn’t walk after working out with co-star Jake Gyllenhaal

June 27, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Tom Holland, the star of Spider-Man: Far From Home, couldn’t walk after working out with co-star Jake Gyllenhaal.

It seems Spider-Man and Mysterio have been getting on just as well off-set as they appear to be onscreen. While in China, Tom Holland decided to take Mysterio actor Jake Gyllenhaal up on his offer to hit the gym – unfortunately, it didn’t work out well for Tom.

Recounting events on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Holland said: “We were in China recently and Jake asked me if I wanted to go to the gym and I have to be honest: I didn’t want to go because Jake Gyllenhaal’s ripped, right? And I’m really competitive. I’m not Jake Gyllenhaal.

“So, we go to the gym, we start working out. We’re doing ab exercises, leg exercises, and then he turns to me and he goes, ‘Tom, do you wanna hop on the treadmill and warm up?’ I’m like, ‘Warm up? I’m roasting mate! I’m finished!'”

Unfortunately, this is where Holland’s competitive nature made matters worse: “So, he goes, ‘We’ll do a quick mile!’ I’m like, ‘A mile? Are we pressed for time?'” Holland laughed. “So, immediately, I’m regretting suggesting doing two miles.”

“We set off, we start running, and there’s a law in the gym that you can’t run slower than the guy next to you. So, I’m running next to him, two minutes in I’ve got a stitch, I’m wishing everything was over but I’m saying, ‘There’s nothing that’s gonna’ get me off this treadmill. I will beat Jake Gyllenhaal in this race.’ And then like three, four minutes in, he goes, ‘Tom, this is too easy. Let’s up the incline.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, let’s do it!’ We up the incline, four, five more kilometers go by, he goes, ‘This is too easy. Let’s up it to three!’ I’m like, ‘Oh my goodness, fine, yeah, sure Jake, absolutely.’ Finally, we’ve got a kilometer left and he’s like, ‘Let’s do 3.5,’ and I’m like, ‘Let’s do 4. Why 3.5? Why stop there?’ Then we’re doing press later that day and I can’t walk.”

Well, it seems like Tom learned his lesson and hopefully will know better next time than to try and best Gyllenhaal in the gym. We can see how the two get on in front of the character when Far From Home hits screens next week.

Peter Parker returns in Spider-Man: Far From Home, the next chapter of the Spider-Man: Homecoming series! Our friendly neighborhood Super Hero decides to join his best friends Ned, MJ, and the rest of the gang on a European vacation. However, Peter’s plan to leave super heroics behind for a few weeks are quickly scrapped when he begrudgingly agrees to help Nick Fury uncover the mystery of several elemental creature attacks, creating havoc across the continent!

Spider-Man: Far From Home will be released on July 2nd and features the return of Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Marisa Tomei (Aunt May), Zendaya (Michelle), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), Angourie Rice (Betty Brant), Tony Revolori (Flash Thompson), Martin Star (Mr. Harrington), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), with Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) as Mysterio and J.B. Smoove (Uncle Drew), Remy Hii (Crazy Rich Asians) and Numan Acar (Homeland) in undisclosed roles.
