Avengers: Endgame writers on why they didn’t want to kill Captain America

July 24, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the writers of Avengers: Endgame, have revealed why they chose not to kill Captain America.

Avengers: Endgame was the end of the road for numerous long-time MCU characters with a couple perishing in the fight against Thanos. Captain America wasn’t one of these but thanks to time travel, his character has been taken out of the equation for good.

But why did writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely opt against killing him off when battling with Thanos? Well, as they explained to ComicBook.com at SDCC, it wasn’t the right move:

“It’s too easy. That guy will jump on a grenade every movie,” McFeely explained. “Tony’s going one way and Steve is going another. Over the course of many movies, Tony is going from selfish to selfless and Steve’s not doing exactly the opposite but he’s certainly starting at selfless and learning to get a life and to be self-interested. When he makes the decision at the end to go back, put his shield down, and be the soldier that comes back from war, that’s the biggest journey. Jumping on another grenade is not a move for him.”

It made more sense in their eyes for Iron Man and Black Widow to be the ones to make the sacrifice as opposed to the more obvious choice in Captain America. Was this the right movie? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter @flickeringmyth…

Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Josh Brolin (Thanos), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Benedict Wong (Wong), Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts), Evangeline Lilly (The Wasp), Letitia Wright (Shuri) and Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie).
