The Lost Boys producer says redeveloped TV pilot is “going to have a lot in common with the movie”

August 7, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Back in 2016 it was announced that Rob Thomas (Veronica Mars, iZombie) and The CW were teaming for a TV adaptation of the classic 1987 vampire film The Lost Boys for The CW, with the project finally making it to the pilot this year only for the network to pass.

While The Lost Boys didn’t get a pick up, The CW announced in May that it hadn’t given up hope on the potential series and would instead be redeveloping it for another pilot. Now, in an interview with Deadline, Thomas has been speaking about the project and its difficult development process:

“It’s been four years that I have been playing around with Lost Boys, trying to get it made. Two years ago, I wrote a very outside-the-box version of it. The network didn’t want to go that far outside the box. So fortunately, the writer who is working on it right now, Heather Mitchell, loves the original movie and is eager to make the series look a little bit more like the original Lost Boys. It’s two human brothers showing up in this California beach town with the amusement park and a vampire infestation. It’s going to have a lot in common with the movie.”

“I had a way I wanted to do it that was exciting to me,” he continued. “Once the network didn’t want to do it, I was eager to give them the version they would like to put on the air, usually that’s just smart television producing. I think it would’ve been very hard for me but I love that she is doing it, I love that she is a big enough fan of the movie that she wants to keep it a lot more recognizable.”

Two of the stars of the first pilot, Dakota Shapiro (Valley of the Boom) and Medalion Rahimi (Still Star-Crossed), have been retained for the redeveloped pilot and will reprise their roles as David and Stella (a version of the Star character from the movie). Further casting is yet to be announced.
