Spider-Man: Far From Home becomes Sony’s highest-grossing movie ever

August 20, 2019 by Gary Collinson

The Walt Disney Company has been dominating the box office this year, with five of the six movies to reach the $1 billion mark so far in 2019 coming from the Mouse House.

However, the other – Spider-Man: Far From Home – has now just set a brand new record for Sony Pictures, with the MCU superhero sequel hitting $1.109 billion this past weekend to overtake Skyfall on $1.1 billion to become the studio’s highest-grossing release of all time.

Sony’s deal with Marvel Studios has certainly proved hugely beneficial for the studio, with 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and Far From Home pulling close to $2 billion between them, and the latter no doubt enjoying a decent bump thanks to Disney and Marvel’s record-breaking Avengers: Endgame.

It’s unclear what the future holds for Tom Holland’s web-slinger at this point, with various conflicting reports about the deal between Sony and Marvel and whether it expires with Far From Home or a third solo movie.

Unconfirmed rumours this summer suggested an extension if Far From Home reached the billion dollar mark, although there’s also been some chatter than Sony may look to bring the wall-crawler into its fledgling Universe of Marvel Characters alongside Tom Hardy’s Venom and Jared Leto’s Morbius.

At this point, all we can do is speculate, but let us know what you’re hoping to see next for Spidey, either in the comments below or on our social media @FlickeringMyth…
