Avengers: Endgame co-director says he has no regrets and wouldn’t change anything

August 29, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Joe Russo, the co-director of Avengers: Endgame, has revealed that he has no regrets about the film and wouldn’t take back any of the filmmaking decisions.

One can imagine that when directors see their finished movie on screen, they might notice little things that they wish they could go back and change to improve the movie. There is certainly a lot of pressure to get things right, especially with massive movies like Avengers: Endgame.

But Joe Russo, the co-director of the film, apparently doesn’t have any regrets and wouldn’t change any decisions made. Speaking at a Talks with Google event, the director said: “If we regret anything by the end of it, then we did not do our jobs right…As we’re making the film, we’re shooting a year. So something we shot two months in we can watch three months later in the edit room and decide we don’t like performance, we don’t like the tone, we didn’t get the joke right, we didn’t get the emotion right and we reshoot it.

“So, all the way up until we deliver these movies. The famous I am Iron Man line was literally shot like two months before this film was in theaters. It’s an exceedingly iterative process and the only limits are how much sleep you need to get.”

With all the success that Endgame has found, it’s perhaps not surprising that the director doesn’t regret a thing about the movie. Though with all the director’s cuts and final editions we see on DVD and Blu-ray, its clear many filmmakers are in a slightly different boat for whatever reason.

Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Josh Brolin (Thanos), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Benedict Wong (Wong), Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts), Evangeline Lilly (The Wasp), Letitia Wright (Shuri) and Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie).
